Ventilation tube insertion is a procedure where a tube is placed in the eardrum to correct pressure problems and fluid accumulation in the middle ear. Dysfunction of the Eustachian tubes can prevent proper ventilation of the middle ear, leading to fluid accumulation. This condition can cause hearing loss and ear infections. A small surgical procedure is performed to insert the tube into the eardrum, allowing air to enter the middle ear and balance the pressure. This procedure is usually performed on children and heals quickly. If the tubes fall out, spring or summer is typically preferred for tube removal. This treatment is generally successful, but sometimes repeated tube applications or permanent tubes may be required. Children with tubes can swim in clean water with appropriate precautions.
